With its deep-toned façade and distinctive architectural profile, this Devon home strikes a bold first impression, and the landscape now meets it with equal presence. As the fourth collaboration with this long-time client, this project called for a complete front-of-home transformation that would balance structure with softness, and geometry with natural grace.
From Narrow Approach to Gracious Welcome
The existing entrance felt narrow and abrupt. In its place, Roots designed a wide, dry-set thermal flagstone walkway in a soul color random pattern with bluestone banding—gently curving from the driveway to the stoop to create a more generous and gracious welcome. Layered Foundation Beds
A planting palette of hybrid kousa dogwoods, flowering hawthorns, and southern magnolia adds evergreen presence and soft flowering layers throughout the seasons.Seasonal Interest with Subtle Symmetry
Fine gardening details were central to the design, from the perfect radius of bed-to-lawn transitions to the placement of trees and perennials that keep the garden evolving with spring, summer, and fall color.Stormwater & Grading Solution
The entire front was regraded—raised 16 to 24 inches to address longstanding drainage issues—and new stormwater infrastructure was installed to protect the property long-term.
Where Texture and Thoughtfulness Meet
This landscape is rich with dimension, movement, and quiet structure. Each curve is intentional. Vines scale the brick chimney. Underplantings bring softness to the foundation. Every detail is placed with care.
