A Garden Shed Worth Stopping For: How Roots Makes Structures Feel Like Part of the Landscape
When we design a garden, we don’t just think about plantings and paths. We think about permanence. The kind of details that, when placed with care, will look even better in ten years than they did on installation day. The custom shed at our Bryn Mawr property is a perfect example of this philosophy in action.
Built with weathered cedar shingles and framed to feel more cottage than utility, this structure does more than store tools. It gives the landscape a sense of character. It feels like it’s always been there—tucked into the trees, surrounded by shade plantings and a graceful stone path. Over time, climbing vines have worked their way up the beams, softening the edges and making the shed feel like a storybook moment.
Roots worked closely with the client on both the design and material selections, ensuring this wasn’t just another prefab solution. The proportions, roofline, and orientation were carefully planned so the structure would feel grounded in the environment, not dropped into it. Even in construction, you can see the intention—this is a garden feature built to last.
We believe garden structures should invite you in, not stick out. Whether it's a garden shed, a pool house, or a tucked-away office, it should add to the experience of the landscape. It should weather well. It should hold a bit of charm. Most of all, it should feel like it belongs.
